INTRODUCTION TO PUBLIC SPEAKING
Designed for students in grades 5-9, our free 4-week program meets virtually in a group session once a week to take students through the process of speech writing and development from start to finish. Throughout the program, students will work on creating and perfecting their own speech, which they will eventually present for scoring to simulate a real competition.
We have already held two successful class sessions in October 2020 and March 2021, and we would look forward to broadening our impact through our summer session!

WHO CAN JOIN

WHAT WE TEACH

BEYOND INSTRUCTION
Fitting Your Needs
Whether you simply want to build confidence presenting in front of a class, or have your sights set on winning awards in oratory competitions, this course will help you build a fundamental skill set for a variety of uses. Our program is primarily geared toward middle school level students in grades 5-9, but any students with proficient writing, conversational speaking, and active listening skills are welcome to join. Additionally, students located anywhere can participate in our virtual classes!
Conveying Clarity
Our program is comprised of 1-hour weekly group classes that span over the course of a month. During the first two weeks, we cover both speech writing and delivery following common competitive rubric elements to provide structured learning. The third week features experienced guest speakers who will share their unique perspectives. Then, each student will receive individualized instruction time to perfect their own speech. Finally, our program concludes with a mock competition on the fourth week where students can showcase what they learned by presenting their own speech, receiving feedback, and even winning awards.
Developing Connections
By joining our program, students will be able to learn firsthand from high-achieving upperclassmen dedicated to a variety of organizations, including Future Business Leaders of America, the National Speech and Debate Association, and more. Our guest speakers have reached high levels of leadership and competitive success, and will serve as a great resource and learning opportunity for program participants. Previous guest speakers include Haneol Lee, the FBLA National Treasurer, Jeslyn and Audrey Nguyen, LOHS Speech & Debate officers, and Joshua Zhang, former FBLA Inland Section President and current UCLA student.
